Garrad Hassan, a GL company, is an independent technical and engineering consultancy for renewable energy, serving the wave, tidal, onshore and offshore wind, and solar sectors. From its offices across the globe, the company offers products and services to stakeholders at all stages of the renewable energy project lifecycle which include engineering, consultancy services, industry standard technology products, and professional training courses.

Garrad Hassan’s focus on the wave and tidal energy sectors began in 2005 with the founding of its Marine Renewables Group. Garrad Hassan engineers work alongside key wave and tidal device developers to help spearhead the development of prototypes and demonstration projects. The company has worked on many projects for a range of stakeholders and has also developed the world’s first integrated tidal turbine design software, GH Tidal Bladed, based on Garrad Hassan’s industry standard software for wind turbine design.

As well as working with key commercial organizations and the public sector, Garrad Hassan’s wave and tidal experts have secured significant funding for ongoing R&D efforts and, while the core of the R&D team operates out of Garrad Hassan’s Bristol headquarters, they are increasingly involved with projects across the globe as the sector evolves. Recent marine developments in Portugal have led to the opening of a new office in Lisbon.

In the UK, Garrad Hassan is currently leading a project titled ‘Performance Assessment of Wave and Tidal Array Systems’ (PerAWaT) funded by the Energy Technologies Institute (www.energytechnologies.co.uk). The PerAWaT consortium, which includes EDF Energy, EON, the University of Edinburgh, the University of Oxford, Queen’s University Belfast, and the University of Manchester, will develop and validate a series of models to predict the performance of wave and tidal stream generator arrays (www.energytechnologies.co.uk/Home/Technology-Programmes/marine.aspx).

In August 2009, as a result of a shared need to maintain the pace of growth in the renewable energy sector globally, Garrad Hassan joined engineering and consulting giant, Germanischer Lloyd (GL), to create the world’s largest provider of lifecycle services with a reputation for technical excellence. The companies’ complementary offerings promise to secure a future near the forefront of worldwide developments in the renewable energy industry.
